Henna is one of the few things you can take home from Oman that is not bought in a shop. Designs start at 3 OMR and take twenty minutes to an hour. We come to your hotel, your apartment or wherever you are staying in Muscat.

Getting henna as a visitor

You do not need to plan ahead the way a bride does. Message us on WhatsApp, tell us where you are staying and when you are free, and we will usually find a slot within a day or two. There is no deposit and no booking form. You pay when the design is finished.

The one thing worth planning is timing within your trip. The stain takes 24 to 48 hours to reach full colour, so getting it done on your last morning means you fly home before it looks its best. Two or three days before you leave is the sweet spot.

What to ask for

Omani traditional is the one to choose if you want something recognisably from this country. Bold geometric and floral motifs with open space between them.

Arabic follows the line of the hand in flowing vines and leaves. Quick, striking, and the most photogenic at arm’s length.

Indian mehndi is the most intricate, filling most of the hand with fine paisley and mandala work. It takes longest and rewards close-up photos.

How long it takes and how long it lasts

A simple design on one hand takes twenty to thirty minutes. A detailed piece running to the wrist takes closer to an hour. The paste then needs to stay on for six hours or more, so do not book it half an hour before dinner.

The design lasts seven to fourteen days. It fades gradually rather than washing off, so it will still be visible when you get home.

Safe henna, and what to avoid

We use organic henna cones we mix ourselves. No black henna, no PPD. This matters more for visitors than for anyone, because black henna is sold to tourists across the region and is the single most common cause of henna injuries.

Natural henna is orange when the paste comes off and darkens to brown, red or maroon over a day or two. Anything that stains jet black in under an hour contains PPD, a hair dye chemical that can cause chemical burns and permanent scarring. If a stall offers it, walk away.

Aftercare in a hot climate

• Leave the paste on for at least six hours. Overnight gives the best colour.
• Scrape the dry paste off. Do not wash it off.
• Keep the design dry for the first 24 hours, which means no pool and no sea on day one.
• Oil the design with coconut or olive oil before swimming or showering afterwards.
• Sunscreen and chlorine both fade it. Oil first, then sunscreen.

If you are heading to Wahiba Sands or the coast, get your henna done a day or two before rather than the morning of.
